The Elementary Spelling Book, being an Improvement on the American Spelling Book · No. 81 · Part 6: Where the accent falls
52. Table No. 81: read, spell and write
Goal: Your child reads and spells the words of table No. 81 by syllables, using the same method as the other tables.
You'll need
- The book, open to this table
- A slate, small whiteboard, or paper and pencil
What's in the book
The scan text of this page could not be read when these guides were made, so this guide gives the method only. Read the heading on the page to see how many syllables the words have and where the accent falls. The sentences on the next page use words such as prospective, attentive, offensive and inactive.
The lesson, step by step
Review
Read a column from No. 80 and spell three words by syllables.
Read the heading
Read the heading over No. 81 with your child. It tells you the number of syllables and which one is accented. Clap two or three words to hear it.
Read the table aloud
Read the table a column at a time. You read a word, your child repeats it, pointing. Then your child reads a column alone.
Spell aloud by syllables
Your child spells each word a syllable at a time, saying each syllable, then the whole word. Do one column looking, then cover it and spell a few from memory.
Dictation
Choose six words from the table. Say each, use it in a sentence, say it again. Your child writes it. Check together against the book.
Wrap up
Your child picks the hardest word in the table and teaches you how to spell it.
