You'll need

  • The book, open to this table
  • A slate, small whiteboard, or paper and pencil

What's in the book

No. 55 has words like blade, shade, glade, spade, grade, trade, bride, pride, and globe, probe, tribe, place, space, grace. The sentences at the top of the page go with No. 54: "History is an account of past events."

The lesson, step by step

  1. Review

Read four words from No. 54 and clap the syllables.

  2. The pattern

Silent-e words again (like Nos. 17 to 21), now starting with two consonants: bl, gr, tr, pr, gl, pl, sp. The vowel says its name. In "place", "space" and "grace" the c is soft and sounds like s.

  3. Read the table aloud

Read the table aloud together, a column at a time. You say a word, your child says it back while pointing to it. Then your child reads a column alone. Some of the words:

    blade, shade, glade, spade

    grade, trade, bride, pride

    globe, probe, tribe

    place, space, grace

  4. Spell aloud

Now the old way: your child looks at a word, then spells it aloud and says it.

    Sayg, l, o, b, e, globe.

Go down a column like this. Then cover the column, say a word, and have your child spell it aloud without looking.

  5. Read the sentences

The sentences at the top of this page belong to No. 54. Read them first:

History is an account of past events.

Botany is the science of plants.

  6. Dictation

Say each word, use it in a short sentence of your own, and say it again. Your child writes it. Try these: blade, shade, trade, bride, pride, globe, place, grace.

Check together against the book. Any word that came out wrong goes on a card for tomorrow.
