You'll need

  • The book, open to this table
  • A slate, small whiteboard, or paper and pencil

What's in the book

No. 47 has rise, elope, use, guide, wise, nose, rose, muse, quite, sphere, chose. No. 48 has spoil, point, noise, hoist, broil, coin, soil, moist, and also pound, round, ground. Sentences: "A sphere is a round body or globe." "The earth is not quite round."

The lesson, step by step

  1. The pattern

No. 47: silent-e words again, and in many of them the s sounds like z (rise, wise, nose, rose). The key line says s=z.

No. 48: oi says the sound in "boy": coin, soil, noise. And ou says the sound in "out": round, ground.

  2. Read the table aloud

Read the table aloud together, a column at a time. You say a word, your child says it back while pointing to it. Then your child reads a column alone. Some of the words:

    rise, use, guide, wise, nose

    rose, muse, quite, chose

    spoil, point, noise, broil, coin

    soil, moist, round, ground

  3. Spell aloud

Now the old way: your child looks at a word, then spells it aloud and says it.

    Sayn, o, i, s, e, noise.

Go down a column like this. Then cover the column, say a word, and have your child spell it aloud without looking.

  4. Read the sentences

Under the table are short reading lessons that use its words. Your child reads them aloud, pointing to each word. Help with any word not yet learned. Two of them:

A sphere is a round body or globe.

The earth is not quite round.

A hen will sit on a nest of eggs and hatch chickens.

  5. Dictation

Say each word, use it in a short sentence of your own, and say it again. Your child writes it. Try these: rise, wise, nose, rose, coin, soil, point, noise.

Check together against the book. Any word that came out wrong goes on a card for tomorrow.

  6. Wrap up

Your child finds two words where s says z and two where oi says "oy".
