What's in the book

No. 25 is a list of words such as apt, cart, start, hurt, past, jest, dart, pert, shirt, vast, kept. Reading sentences follow, such as "Coal and wood will make a fire."

The lesson, step by step

  1. Review

Spell aloud five words from Nos. 22 to 24.

  2. The pattern

More words that end in two consonants. Some have an r in them: in "cart" the a sounds like the a in "bar"; in "hurt" and "shirt" the vowel sounds like "er".

  3. Read the table aloud

Read the table aloud together, a column at a time. You say a word, your child says it back while pointing to it. Then your child reads a column alone. Some of the words:

    apt, cart, start, hurt, past

    jest, dart, pert, shirt, vast

    kept

  4. Spell aloud

Now the old way: your child looks at a word, then spells it aloud and says it.

    Sayc, a, r, t, cart.

Go down a column like this. Then cover the column, say a word, and have your child spell it aloud without looking.

  5. Read the sentences

Under the table are short reading lessons that use its words. Your child reads them aloud, pointing to each word. Help with any word not yet learned. Two of them:

Coal and wood will make a fire.

Will you help me pin my frock?

Do not sit on the damp ground.

  6. Dictation

Say each word, use it in a short sentence of your own, and say it again. Your child writes it. Try these: apt, start, hurt, past, shirt, kept.

Check together against the book. Any word that came out wrong goes on a card for tomorrow.

  7. Wrap up

Your child reads one sentence to you, then copies it neatly.
