What's in the book

A list headed "Abbreviations Explained", running onto the next page, from "A. B. Bachelor of Arts" and "A. D. Anno Domini, the year of our Lord" through names of months, states and titles, such as Jan., Mr., N. Y., P. M., P. O., P. S., Rev.

The lesson, step by step

  1. The idea

SayAn abbreviation is a short way of writing a word, usually ending with a period. This list tells what each one means.

  2. Read a few

    Read some entries together:

    A. B. Bachelor of Arts.

    A. D. Anno Domini, the year of our Lord.

  3. Everyday ones

Find the ones still used every day on the next page: Mr., Jan., P. M., P. O., P. S. Your child says what each stands for.

  4. Months and states

Your child finds the abbreviation for your state and for this month, and writes them.

  5. Wrap up

Your child writes Mr., Mrs., Dr. and the short names of three months, each with its period.

Tip

Some abbreviations here (old states and territories, old titles) are history now. Choose only the ones your family uses.
