  • A slate, small whiteboard, or paper and pencil
  • A few index cards or slips of paper (optional)

What's in the book

The last page of sentences built on sound-alike words, such as "Ladies wear sashes round the waist."

The lesson, step by step

  1. Review

Use the cards from the earlier pages. Your child reads each word and gives its meaning.

  2. Read the sentences

Read the sentences on this page aloud together, for example:

Ladies wear sashes round the waist.

After each one, your child says which spelling is used.

  3. Find the partner

For five sound-alike words on this page, your child says the other spelling and its meaning (waist, waste).

  4. Spell aloud

You give a meaning; your child spells the word. Mix in pairs from all the earlier pages.

  5. Dictation

Dictate six of the everyday pairs in short sentences: their, there; two, too; know, no; hear, here; whole, hole; week, weak.

  6. Wrap up

Put away every card your child got right three days running.
