What's in the book

Lesson 116 gives a plan for describing lead and a general plan for other substances (tin, zinc, glass, copper, silver and more).

The lesson, step by step

  1. Review

Ask your child to parse "Alas" in "Alas! we lost."

  2. The plan

The book says to write a description of Lead with this plan: Properties (weight, color, etc.); its ore; where found in our country; how obtained; how prepared for use; uses; the making of small shot.

  3. Choose a substance

Lead is not something children should handle. Your child may pick another from the book's list (tin, zinc, glass, brass, copper, clay, sand, silver) and use the general plan: properties, where found, how obtained, how prepared, uses.

  4. Find facts

Look up the substance in an encyclopedia or a reference book. Take short notes for each point.

  5. Write

Write a paragraph for each point in the plan.

  6. Use it today

Find something made of glass, copper or tin around the house.
