What's in the book

Lesson 51 defines person and has seven sentences to mark, plus sentences to write with models.

The lesson, step by step

  1. Review

Ask for the four genders and an example of each.

  2. The new idea

    Read:

Person is that property of a noun or pronoun which distinguishes the speaker, the person spoken to,

and the person or thing spoken of. Remind your child of the three persons from Lesson 30.

  3. Nouns have person too

SayEllen, come here. Ask: Who is spoken to? Ellen. So Ellen is second person here. In "Ellen came here," Ellen is third person.

  4. Tell the person

Do these from the book aloud:

    My lesson is learned.

Ellen, tell your sister to come home.

Your horse is in our barn, Mr. Eckel.

  5. Write sentences

Write a few following the models:

    We are pupils.

    You may be excused.

They left their homes in sorrow.

  6. Use it today

In a conversation in a story, find a noun in the second person (someone being spoken to by name).
