39. Composition: The Lion
Goal: Your child reads a short description several times and writes it from memory in their own words.
You'll need
- The book, open to this lesson
- Paper and a pencil (or a slate)
What's in the book
Lesson 40 is a reading, "The Lion," about the lion's size, coloring, mane and hunting habits, to read and reproduce from memory.
The lesson, step by step
Review
Ask your child to fix "She sings good."
Read it
The book says:
Read the following description three or four times, then reproduce it from memory.
Read it once aloud to your child, then let them read it twice.
Talk it over
Close the book. Ask what the description told about the lion's size, color, mane and hunting. List the topics in order on paper.
Write from memory
Using the list, your child writes the description in their own words. They don't need the exact sentences.
Compare
Open the book and compare. What did your child remember? What did they leave out?
Use it today
Tell someone three facts about lions from today's reading.
