What's in the book

Page 26 finishes Lesson 16 with nouns to use as objects and a model analysis of "Scholars learn lessons" with ten sentences to analyze. Page 27 gives models for pointing out verbs, with ten sentences.

The lesson, step by step

  1. Review

Ask: What is a transitive verb? Intransitive? Copulative? Give an example of each.

  2. Nouns as objects

Use some of the book's nouns as objects in sentences, aloud: cars, grass, books, laws, wheat, letters. For example: "Cows eat grass."

  3. Learn the analysis model

Read the book's model analysis of

    Scholars learn lessons.

It names the kind of sentence, the subject, the predicate and the object, and asks "why?" for each. Your child says it after you.

  4. Analyze

Analyze some of the book's sentences aloud with the model:

    Dogs hunt rabbits.

    Jane studies botany.

    Haste makes waste.

  5. Point out the verbs

Page 27 gives models like "Grows is a verb; (why?): intransitive..." Use them on these:

    Viola blushed.

    Stephen was a martyr.

    Henry struck William.

Your child names each verb and its class and says why.

  6. Check together

    Check with the answers below.

  7. Use it today

Find a sentence with an object in today's reading and analyze it aloud.
