You'll need

  • Square tiles or paper squares
  • A tape measure
  • A slate, small whiteboard or paper and pencil

What's in the book

The table of square measure (square inches, feet, yards, rods, acres, square miles), then problems such as "How many sq. ft. in a blackboard 9 feet long and 3 feet wide?"

The lesson, step by step

  1. Cover it with squares

Lay paper squares over a book cover: 4 rows of 6 squares make 24 squares. That is the area.

  2. Multiply instead

Show that length × width gives the same number without counting.

  3. Book problems

Do the problems you find easy; the acre and square-mile ones can wait.

Afterwards

Find the area of a rug or a room in square feet.

Answers to the book's problems
