  • A slate, small whiteboard or paper and pencil

What's in the book

The table: 10 cents make 1 dime; 10 dimes make 1 dollar; 10 dollars make 1 eagle. Then problems such as "How many cents in 3 dimes?" (worked: 30 cents) and "How many dimes in 60 cents?" (worked: 6).

The lesson, step by step

  1. Real coins

    Trade 10 pennies for a dime. Then count dimes to a dollar.

  2. The eagle

    An "eagle" was a ten-dollar gold coin. It is no longer made, but it is a fun piece of history.

  3. Book problems

    Work through the page.

  4. Today's coins

    Add what the book leaves out: nickels (5 cents) and quarters (25 cents).

Afterwards

Let your child count the coins in a jar.
