Ray's New Primary Arithmetic · Lesson LXXII · Unit 7: Signs, bigger numbers and mixed problems
72. How many times? (up to 32)
Goal: Your child says how many times one number goes into another, such as "Eighteen are how many times 3?"
You'll need
- About 20 small counters: dried beans, buttons, pennies or pebbles (the book suggests marbles, beans or pebbles)
What's in the book
Questions such as "Four are how many times 2?" (worked: 4 are 2 times 2) and "Eighteen are how many times 2? How many times 3? 6? 9?"
The lesson, step by step
One number, many ways
Lay out 18 beans. Group them in 2s, then 3s, then 6s, then 9s. Count the groups each time: 9, 6, 3, 2.
Book questions
Work down the page, using the times tables instead of beans where you can.
Afterwards
Ask about 12, 24 and 36: how many ways can each be grouped?
