Ray's New Primary Arithmetic · Lesson LXVI · Unit 7: Signs, bigger numbers and mixed problems
66. Adding past a ten
Goal: Your child adds across a ten, such as 29 + 2 or 47 + 6.
You'll need
- Bundles or cups of ten and single beans
- A slate, small whiteboard or paper and pencil
What's in the book
Harder rows of questions such as "How many are 29 + 2? 4 + 39? 49 + 6?"
The lesson, step by step
Make the ten
For 29 + 2: 29 needs 1 more to make 30, then 1 more is 31. Show it with a bundle: the loose ones make a new ten.
Use the 9 + 2 fact
Since 9 + 2 = 11, 29 + 2 is one more ten: 31. Look for this pattern in each row.
Book rows
Work along the rows on the page.
Afterwards
