What's in the book

Ten mixed problems ("promiscuous questions" meant mixed-up questions), such as "Joseph had 14 cents, and bought 2 oranges, at 5 cents each: how much money had he left?"

The lesson, step by step

  1. What is happening?

For each problem, ask first: Are we putting together, taking away, or making equal groups? Then solve it.

  2. Worked example

Joseph paid 2 times 5 cents, which are 10 cents; he had left 14 cents less 10 cents, which are 4 cents.

  3. Work through the page

Do the problems over one or two days.

Afterwards

Unit 5 is done. Keep the times-table cards in the daily warm-up.
