You'll need

  • A slate, small whiteboard or paper and pencil

What's in the book

Story problems such as "Mary paid 5 cents for ribbon, 4 cents for thread, and 3 cents for tape: how much did she pay for all?" and "Joseph caught 6 fishes, Samuel 3, and Henry 5: how many fishes did they all catch?"

The lesson, step by step

  1. Read slowly

Read the first problem aloud. Ask: What are we finding? What numbers do we need?

  2. Answer in a sentence

Your child answers in a full sentence: "Mary paid 12 cents for all."

  3. Work through the page

Do the rest of the problems the same way.

  4. Act one out

Act one problem out with coins or toys, letting your child be the shopkeeper.

Afterwards

Unit 3 is done. Spend a day reviewing any addition table that is still slow before starting subtraction.
