Ray's New Practical Arithmetic · Arts. 128–129 · Unit 10: Fractions
61. Fraction problems of every kind
Goal: Your child adds and subtracts fractional measures and solves mixed fraction problems.
You'll need
- The book
- A slate, small whiteboard or scrap paper
- A notebook and pencil
What's in the book
Adding and subtracting fractional compound numbers by changing the fractions to whole units first, then 22 promiscuous (mixed) examples with fractions. Answers are printed for most.
The lesson, step by step
Warm-up
Mental: 1/3 of an hour? 1/4 of a day? 2/3 of a yard in inches?
The rule
Read:
To add and subtract fractional compound numbers, find the value of the fractions in integers
and then proceed as in Addition and Subtraction of Compound Numbers.
Example: 1/2 day − 1/3 hr. = 12 hr. − 20 min. = 11 hr. 40 min.
Guided practice
Do problems 1 and 2 of Art. 128 together.
Puzzles
Read a few of the mixed examples aloud and solve one together:
What part of 368 is 170?
(170/368 = 85/184.)
Then try one of the "What number is that ..." problems by drawing a bar diagram.
Independent practice
Your child does about eight of the promiscuous examples.
Check and wrap-up
Answers are printed. Your child makes up a fraction puzzle for you.
