What's in the book

The table of long measure and 11 reduction problems with printed answers.

The lesson, step by step

  1. Warm-up

Mental: inches in 2 feet? Feet in 3 yards? Inches in a yard?

  2. The table

    Read:

Long Measure is used in measuring distances, or length, in any direction.

    Table: 12 inches 1 foot, 3 feet 1 yard, 5½ yards or 16½ feet 1 rod, 320 rods 1 mile.

Note for you: the rod is an old surveying unit; it still turns up in land deeds and canoe portages.

  3. Work one together

Reduce 2 yd. 2 ft. 7 in. to inches.

    2 yd. × 3 = 6 ft., + 2 = 8 ft. 8 × 12 = 96 in., + 7 = 103 in.

  4. Going up

    Reduce 2240 rd. to miles.

    2240 ÷ 320 = 7 mi.

  5. Independent practice

Your child does the rest of problems 2 to 11. Problem 11 gives a number worth knowing:

    Reduce 1 mi. to feet.

  6. Check and wrap-up

Answers are printed (problem 11 is 5280 ft.). Pace out 16½ feet in the yard or hallway so your child sees how long a rod is.
