The lesson, step by step
Warm-up
Mental: 3 × $1.25? 4 × 75 cents? 10 × $2.50?
The rule
Read:
Multiply as in Simple Numbers.
Put the decimal point in the same place in the product as it is in the multiplicand.
Work the book example
Read:
What will 13 cows cost, at 47 dollars 12 cents 5 mills each?
Write $47.125 × 13. Multiply as whole numbers: 47125 × 13 = 612625. Three figures after the point: $612.625.
Guided practice
Do problem 2 together:
Multiply $7.835 by 8.
(Answer $62.68: 62.680 with the last 0 dropped.)
Independent practice
Your child does problems 3 to about 15; the rest another day.
Check and wrap-up
Answers are printed. Mental: 6 pencils at 5 cents? 12 eggs at 3 cents? 8 books at $1.50?
