Ray's New Practical Arithmetic · Art. 42 (problems) · Unit 5: Division
22. Long division practice and review
Goal: Your child does long division accurately with large divisors and solves review problems mixing all four operations.
You'll need
- The book
- A slate, small whiteboard or scrap paper
- A notebook and pencil
What's in the book
More long-division problems with answers, then "Examples for Review" (problems 41 to 52) that combine subtraction, addition and division.
The lesson, step by step
Warm-up
Mental: 12 × 25? 300 ÷ 12? 1000 ÷ 8?
Guided practice
Do this one together:
Divide 48905952 by 9876. 4952.
Before starting, estimate: about 49 million ÷ 10 thousand is about 4900. The answer should be near that.
Estimate first
SayWhen the divisor is big, round it to guess each quotient figure, then check by multiplying.
Read:
Divide 4049160 by 12345. 328.
Review problems
Read the first review example:
Subtract 86247 from 94231 and divide the remainder by 16. 499.
Do it together: 94231 − 86247 = 7984; 7984 ÷ 16 = 499.
Independent practice
Your child does three or four of the long-division problems and three or four review problems.
Check
Answers are printed for these. Prove any wrong one by multiplying back to find the slip.
Wrap-up
Mental: 250 ÷ 25? 1200 ÷ 12? 640 ÷ 16?
Afterwards
Spread the rest of these over the week, two or three a day.
