Ray's New Practical Arithmetic · Art. 31 (49–67) · Unit 4: Multiplication
17. Multiplication story problems
Goal: Your child chooses multiplication for story problems about prices and quantities, sometimes with two steps.
You'll need
- The book
- A slate, small whiteboard or scrap paper
- A notebook and pencil
What's in the book
Nineteen story problems on flour, pork, sugar, sailing and buying and selling, with printed answers.
The lesson, step by step
Warm-up
Mental: 6 barrels at $5 each? 12 eggs at 3 cents each? 7 days at 8 hours a day?
Price times quantity
Read:
What will 126 barrels of flour cost, at $6 a barrel?
SayEach barrel costs $6, and there are 126 of them, so multiply. 126 × 6 = $756.
Two steps
Read:
A grocer bought 2 barrels of sugar, each weighing 215 pounds, for 8 cents a pound: how much did he pay for the sugar?
First find the pounds (2 × 215 = 430), then the cost (430 × 8 = 3440 cents).
Guided practice
Do problem 50 together:
What will 823 barrels of pork cost, at $12 a barrel?
(Answer $9876.)
Independent practice
Your child does problems 51 to about 62.
Check
Answers are printed. For two-step problems, check each step separately.
Wrap-up
Mental story: A book costs $2. What do 15 books cost? (30 dollars.)
Tip
Old prices (flour at $6 a barrel) are part of the charm. Ask your child what the same things might cost now.
