Ray's New Intellectual Arithmetic · Lesson XLVIII · Unit 6: Money, weights and measures
48. Dry measure
Goal: Your child knows the table by heart and changes quantities to larger and smaller units.
You'll need
- The book page
- Real measures or coins if you have them
What's in the book
The table: 2 pints make 1 quart; 8 quarts, 1 peck; 4 pecks, 1 bushel. Then problems that change to smaller units (multiply) and to larger units (divide).
The lesson, step by step
Warm up
Ask three or four problems from the last lesson again, out of order. Your child answers and says why.
Show the reasoning
Say3 quarts 1 pint: 3 quarts are 6 pints, and 1 pint more makes 7 pints.
Going up: 27 pints are 13 quarts 1 pint, which are 1 peck 5 quarts 1 pint.
Work the problems aloud
Read each problem on the page aloud. Your child answers, then explains in a full sentence, the way the book's model solutions do. The problems go like this:
Reduce 2 bu. 3 pk. 7 qt. to quarts.
Reduce 27 pt. to pecks.
Reduce 3 bu. 7 qt. 1 pt. to pints.
Ask “Why?”
After each answer ask “Why?” or “How do you know?” Ray's wants the reasoning said aloud, not just the number. If your child stalls, go back to the model and say the first half of the explanation together.
Wrap up
Pick the two problems that were hardest today. Tomorrow, start with those as the warm-up.
Afterwards
Do the rest of the lesson's problems over the next day or two, a few at a time. Move on when your child can explain them without help.
Answers to the book's problems
7) 7 pt. 8) 29 qt. 9) 14 pk. 10) 39 pt. 11) 95 qt. 12) 101 pt. 13) 3 qt 1 pt. 17) 1 pk 5 qt 1 pt. 23) 194 qt. 24) 129 pt. 25) 288 pt. 26) 207 pt. 27) 369 pt.
