McGuffey's Eclectic Spelling-Book, Revised Edition · Lesson 236 · Part 10: Odd words, names, abbreviations and punctuation
236. Names of men
Goal: Your child reads and spells these names, always with a capital letter.
You'll need
- The book page for this lesson
- A slate, small whiteboard, or paper and pencil
What's in the book
“Names of Men.” Columns of first names, marked for pronunciation.
The lesson, step by step
Look at the pattern
First names, spelled carefully and always with a capital letter.
Remind your child: names of people always start with a capital letter.
Read the list aloud together
Open the book to the lesson. Read the words aloud together, one column at a time. Some of them:
Charles, Adam, Harold, Frank, Albert, Henry
Then your child reads a column alone, pointing to each word.
The marks show how to say each name. Your child may know someone with one of these names.
Spell aloud by syllables
Spell the old way: say the word, spell each syllable and say it, then say the whole word again. Use the spaces in the book to find the syllables.
Your child spells eight or ten words from the list this way, looking first, then with the book closed.
Write from dictation
Close the book. Say eight names. Your child writes each one with a capital first letter.
Check and correct
Open the book and check each word together, letter by letter. For each mistake, your child looks at the right spelling, says it, spells it aloud, and writes it correctly three times.
Add any word that was missed to a hard-words list.
Afterwards
Tomorrow, before the next lesson, dictate five words from this list again, including any your child missed.
