You'll need

  • The book, open to the lesson
  • A slate, small whiteboard or paper and pencil

What's in the book

The script alphabet (handwriting letters, capital and small) and the script figures, for copying.

The lesson, step by step

  1. Find the letters you know

Turn to the page headed Script Alphabet. Your child finds the script letters for their own name, with your help.

  2. Match print and script

Point to a printed letter in any lesson, then find the same letter in the script alphabet. Do four or five.

  3. Copy a few letters

Your child copies three or four script letters onto the slate, slowly.

  4. The figures

Look at the figures on the same page. Your child says each one, then copies 1 to 5.

  5. Wrap up

Your child writes their own name in script on the slate, with your help.

Afterwards

Copy a few script letters each day, until your child can read the script lines in the lessons alone.

Tip

Use this page alongside the lessons from about Lesson V on, whenever a lesson has a script line.
