  • A slate, small whiteboard or paper and pencil

What's in the book

Pages of slate exercises at the back of the book: models in script (handwriting) for copying on a slate.

The lesson, step by step

  1. Look first

Turn to the pages headed Slate Exercises. Look at them together.

SayThese are for copying. We will do just one line today.

  2. Trace in the air

Pick one line. Your child traces the first letter in the air with a finger while you say its name.

  3. Copy one line

Your child copies the line onto the slate, slowly. Neat and small beats fast.

  4. Read it back

Read what your child wrote together. If it is a word you know from the lessons, find it in the book.

  5. Wrap up

Circle the best letter on the slate and say why it is good. Stop there.

Afterwards

Use one line of these pages as a short copying exercise any day, alongside the lessons.

Tip

These pages are extra. Use them whenever your child is ready to write, in any order.
