McGuffey's First Eclectic Reader, Revised Edition · Lesson IX · Part 1: First words: the dog, the cat and the hen
9. Review: Ned, Nat and the eggs
Goal: Your child reads a whole review page and copies two sentences from script.
You'll need
- The book, open to this lesson
- A slate, small whiteboard or lined paper and a pencil
What's in the book
A review story using only words from Lessons I to VIII, then the first Slate Work: two short sentences printed in script to copy.
The lesson, step by step
Warm up
Have your child reread a few lines of Lesson VIII, for example:
Let me get the black hat.
Praise smooth reading and help with any word that sticks.
Old friends
This is a review lesson, with no new words. Before reading, point to a few words on the page and have your child read them as fast as they can. Help with any that are slow.
Read the lesson aloud
Your child reads the lesson aloud, one sentence at a time. Help with any word by pointing to it in the word list.
Here are two lines from it:
Ned is on the box.
Can the dog catch the rat?
Read it a second time, more smoothly.
Talk about it
SayWhere is Ned, and what is in his hand?
SayWhat is in the box?
SayWhat does Nat have to get?
Let your child look back at the page to find answers.
Copywork
Read the Slate Work at the end of the lesson together first. The book gives this Slate Work in script. Your child copies it on the slate or paper, slowly and neatly:
The cat ran. Ann ran.
The man has a hat.
Spelling
Say each word, use it in a short sentence, and have your child spell it aloud, then write it on the slate: cat, ran, hat, man.
Check together and fix any mistakes right away.
Tell it back
Close the book.
SayTell me the story in your own words.
Then let your child read the page once more, as smoothly as they can.
Afterwards
Reread this lesson aloud on the next day before starting a new one. Read the new words from the list in any order until they come quickly.
Tip
Script letters look different from print. Read the script lines to your child first, and point to each word as you go.
