McGuffey's First Eclectic Reader, Revised Edition · Lesson LVIII · Part 7: Birds, a whistle and Chippy
58. When the stars at set of sun (verse)
Goal: Your child reads a verse in script and copies its first lines.
You'll need
- The book, open to this lesson
- A slate, small whiteboard or lined paper and a pencil
What's in the book
Twelve new words and a short religious verse printed in script.
The lesson, step by step
Warm up
Have your child reread a few lines of Lesson LVII, for example:
Where did it go, Rose?
Praise smooth reading and help with any word that sticks.
New words
Point to the new words at the top of the page:
falling counts woes nigh begun griefs stars tear morning Lord each joys
Say each word and have your child say it after you. Sound out the short ones together, then point to words in any order and let your child read them.
For longer words, clap the parts together, then say the whole word.
Read the lesson aloud
Read the lesson aloud once while your child follows, since it is printed in script. Then your child reads it, one line at a time, with your help.
Here are two lines from it:
When the stars at set of sun
Watch you from on high
Read it a second time, more smoothly.
Talk about it
SayWhat do the stars do in the first lines?
SayWhat does nigh mean? (It means near.)
SayWhat does the verse say the Lord sees and hears?
Let your child look back at the page to find answers.
Copywork
The lesson is already in script, so it is ready to copy. Your child copies these lines, slowly and neatly:
When the stars at set of sun
Watch you from on high
Spelling
Say each word, use it in a short sentence, and have your child spell it aloud, then write it on the slate: stars, each, tear, sun.
Check together and fix any mistakes right away.
Say it together
Read the poem together one last time, slowly, keeping the beat.
SayCan you say the first two lines without looking?
Afterwards
Reread this lesson aloud on the next day before starting a new one. Read the new words from the list in any order until they come quickly.
Tip
Read the whole verse to your child first, slowly, since it is in script. Talk about what each line means.
