McGuffey's First Eclectic Reader, Revised Edition · Lesson XXVII · Part 3: Kate, John and friends
27. Review: what shall we do?
Goal: Your child reads a whole review story with words learned so far.
You'll need
- The book, open to this lesson
- A slate, small whiteboard or lined paper and a pencil
What's in the book
A review story with no new words: Fanny and John plan a day in the woods with the tent, the cart and the dolls.
The lesson, step by step
Warm up
Have your child reread a few lines of Lesson XXVI, for example:
They are all in the shade, now, by the brook.
Praise smooth reading and help with any word that sticks.
Old friends
This is a review lesson, with no new words. Before reading, point to a few words on the page and have your child read them as fast as they can. Help with any that are slow.
Read the lesson aloud
Your child reads the lesson aloud, one sentence at a time. Help with any word by pointing to it in the word list.
Here are two lines from it:
I do not like to sit still.
We can put the tent in the cart, and go to some nice spot where the grass is soft and sweet.
Read it a second time, more smoothly.
Talk about it
SayWhat does Fanny not like to do?
SayWhere does John want to go?
SayWhat will mamma do for them?
Let your child look back at the page to find answers.
Copywork
Write this line from the lesson for your child to copy, or let them copy it straight from the book:
I do not like to sit still.
Check for a capital letter at the start and the mark at the end.
Spelling
Say each word, use it in a short sentence, and have your child spell it aloud, then write it on the slate: tent, cart, swing, shade, grass.
Check together and fix any mistakes right away.
Tell it back
Close the book.
SayTell me the story in your own words.
Then let your child read the page once more, as smoothly as they can.
Afterwards
Reread this lesson aloud on the next day before starting a new one. Read the new words from the list in any order until they come quickly.
