What's in the book

Short passages of praise and thanksgiving from the Psalms, including a picture of sailors saved from a storm at sea.

The lesson, step by step

  1. Before you read

These paragraphs come from the Bible, mostly from the Psalms. The language is old and grand, so read slowly. Explain that thee and thou are old forms of you, and hath means has.

  2. Read aloud

Read the first paragraph to your child, then take turns.

O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the people.

Sing unto him; sing psalms unto him; talk ye of all his wondrous works.

  3. The storm at sea

Find the passage about sailors in a storm. Read it slowly, with a steady voice that grows calm at the end:

He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.

SayWhat happened to the sailors? How does the passage end?

  4. Talk about it

SayFind a sentence that repeats an idea in different words. Why does this kind of writing do that?

SayWhich picture from these passages do you remember most?

SayHow should these passages be read aloud: fast or slow, loud or soft?

  5. Tell it back

Your child tells in their own words what the passage about the sailors says.

  6. Memorize

    Learn one verse, such as:

O come, let us sing unto the Lord, let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.
