What's in the book

The passive of the third and fourth conjugations, with one small irregularity (regeris). Exercises both ways and more of the Perseus story.

The lesson, step by step

  1. Review

Conjugate amor in the present passive.

  2. The forms

Section 169: the tense signs are the same as in the active; just use the passive endings. The full tables are at the back of the book (sections 490 and 491). Present passive of regō:

regor, regeris or regere, regitur, regimur, regiminī, reguntur

    of audiō:

audior, audīris or audīre, audītur, audīmur, audīminī, audiuntur

  3. The irregular spot

In regō the "you" form keeps its e: regeris, not regiris. Everything else follows the pattern.

  4. Exercises

Section 170, Exercise I. Two of the lines:

    Agēbat, agēbātur, mittēbat, mittēbātur, dūcēbat.

    Dīcitur, dīcit, mūniuntur, reperient, audientur.

    Then Exercise II.

  5. The story continues

Learn the special vocabulary (respondeō, reply; servō, save; vīta, life; autem, but, moreover). Read section 171: the oracle answers Cepheus.

  6. Wrap up

Your child gives the third person singular of dūcō in all six forms: dūcit, dūcitur, dūcēbat, dūcēbātur, dūcet, dūcētur.

Answers to the book's problems

Exercise I: 1. He was driving, he was being driven, he was sending, he was being sent, he was leading. 2. They drive, they are driven, they are sent, they send, they fortify. 3. I am sent, I shall be sent, I shall send, and then dūcere and dūcēre: you are led, you will be led (the long mark tells them apart). 4. We shall be said, we say, we shall say, we are said, you (plural) were being fortified. 5. He is led, you (plural) are led, we are found, I shall be found, he is driven. 6. We were driving, we were being driven, you are found, you (plural) will be found. 7. You (plural) are fortified, I was coming, I was being led, it will be said. 9. It is said, he says, they are fortified, they will find, they will be heard.
