- A notebook for Latin, and a pencil
- Index cards for new words (optional)
What's in the book
Active and passive voice, the passive personal endings, and the passive of amō and moneō in three tenses. Exercises both ways, then the first part of the story of Perseus and Andromeda.
The lesson, step by step
Review
Conjugate amō in the present, imperfect and future (active).
Active and passive
Section 163. "The lion killed the hunter" is active: the subject does the action. "The lion was killed by the hunter" is passive: the subject receives it. The book draws arrows to show the direction.
Passive endings
Section 164. Singular: -r (I), -ris or -re (you), -tur (he, she, it). Plural: -mur (we), -minī (you), -ntur (they). The book calls the r the passive sign.
The forms
Present passive:
amor, amāris or amāre, amātur, amāmur, amāminī, amantur
Then the imperfect (amābar, "I was being loved") and the future (amābor, "I shall be loved"). Do moneor the same way.
Exercises
Section 167, Exercise I. Two of the lines:
Vocābat, vocābātur, dēlēbitis, dēlēbiminī.
Portābantur, portābant, vidēbimur, vidēbimus.
Then Exercise II.
The story
Learn the special vocabulary (āla, wing; deus, god; mōnstrum, monster; saevus, fierce). Then read section 168, "Perseus and Andromeda".
Wrap up
Your child changes three active forms to passive: amat, amātur; monēbant, monēbantur; vocābō, vocābor.
Afterwards
Two days: endings and forms on day one, exercises and story on day two.
Tip
The book notes that verbs like mātūrō (hasten) and habitō (dwell) have no passive with a person as subject. You cannot "be hastened".
