Latin for Beginners · Lesson XXVI · Part 4: Verbs: the active voice
26. Verbs in -iō of the third conjugation; the imperative
Goal: Your child conjugates capiō in three tenses and gives commands with the imperative.
You'll need
- The book, open to this lesson
- A notebook for Latin, and a pencil
What's in the book
Third-conjugation verbs in -iō like capiō (take), and the imperative mood (commands). Exercises both ways. A note after the lesson points to the third review (Lessons XVIII–XXVI).
The lesson, step by step
Review
Conjugate audiō in the future.
capiō
A few verbs end in -iō but belong to the third conjugation; the infinitive shows it (capere, not capīre). Section 160:
capiō, capis, capit, capimus, capitis, capiunt
It follows audiō wherever two vowels come together, and regō everywhere else. Like it: faciō (make, do), fugiō (flee), iaciō (hurl), rapiō (seize).
Commands
Section 161. The imperative gives an order to "you". The singular is usually the present stem; the plural adds -te:
amā, amāte
monē, monēte
rege, regite
audī, audīte
The imperative of sum is es, este ("be!"). dīcō, dūcō and faciō have short forms: dīc, dūc, fac.
Play it
Take turns giving each other commands in Latin: Venī! Sedē! Audīte! The other person does it.
Exercises
Section 162, Exercise I. Two of the sentences:
Quis fābulae tuae crēdet?
Este bonī, puerī, et audīte verba grāta magistrī.
Then Exercise II, about the goddess and her weapons.
Wrap up
Your child conjugates faciō in the present and gives the commands fac and facite.
