Family Study

Pick one theme for the whole family. Each week you read, talk and make something together. Then each child does lessons, a worksheet, a quiz and a project at their own level. Print a teacher's copy and a copy for each child, and add the unit to your lesson planner.

How each child's level is chosen

Each child works at one of four levels, chosen from their age:

  • Level A, ages 5 to 7 (about kindergarten to grade 2): picture-rich ladder lessons for young learners; questions are read aloud, and answers are pointed to or circled.
  • Level B, ages 8 to 10 (about grades 3 to 5): the young-learner ladders at their harder end, and the first middle-school lessons.
  • Level C, ages 11 to 13 (about grades 6 to 8): the middle-school ladder courses.
  • Level D, ages 14 to 18 (high school): the high-school ladder courses.

Children of 3 or 4 work at level A, alongside an older brother or sister. If a child is ahead or behind for their age, choose another level next to their name. The problems on each sheet come from the ladder lessons for that level. They are made a little harder when a lesson's course is meant for younger grades than the child's level, and a little easier when it is meant for older grades.

3 How long

Each unit has about six parts. In six weeks you do one a week; in twelve, each part gets two weeks; in two or three weeks, two or three parts share a week.
