Phonics Practice · Step 5 of 12
Build words
Spell short words with letter tiles: hear the sounds, then find the letters.
Made by Teddy Rook Book to practice alongside Hannah Ward's lessons. It is not part of her curriculum. About this practice
For grown-ups
What this step teaches
Building words is blending turned around. Your child says a word slowly, hears each sound, and picks the letter for it. Spelling this way makes reading stronger, because it uses the same sounds and letters.
As you practice: Say the word slowly with your child and stretch the sounds: “mmm-ooo-p.” Let them find the letter for each sound, left to right.
Away from the screen
- Say a word slowly and let your child pick magnetic letters for each sound.
- Hold up one finger for each sound in a word (c-a-t is three fingers), then find the letters.
- Write the word together on paper or in salt, saying each sound as you write its letter.
With Hannah's lessons
Goes with the writing and spelling practice in Hannah's 120 lessons and her Little House Kindergarten. Building words here is extra practice, not a replacement for writing by hand.

Hannah's lessons may bring in sounds in a different order. Follow her order, and use the step here that matches what she has taught.
Heart words for this step
Heart words are common words with a part that doesn't follow the rules your child knows yet. Sound out the regular parts, and learn the ♥ part by heart.
