Phonics Practice · Step 12 of 12
Endings and longer words
-s, -es, -ed and -ing, and two-syllable words like sunset and rabbit.
Made by Teddy Rook Book to practice alongside Hannah Ward's lessons. It is not part of her curriculum. About this practice
For grown-ups
What this step teaches
Endings change a word: cat to cats, wish to wishes, jump to jumped and jumping. Find the base word first, then add the ending. -ed can say /t/ (jumped), /d/ (filled) or /ed/ (landed). Longer words are read in parts called syllables: sun-set, rab-bit, pump-kin. Each part has one vowel sound. y at the end of a longer word says long e (happy).
As you practice: Find the base word first, then add the ending. For a longer word, read one part at a time, then put the parts together.
Away from the screen
- Cover the ending with a finger, read the base word, then uncover the ending: jump, jumped.
- Clap the syllables of names and words: Sat-ur-day, pump-kin, rab-bit.
- Write a two-syllable word on a card, cut it between the syllables, and read each half, then the whole.
With Hannah's lessons
Goes with the end of Hannah's 120 lessons and her Phonics Reading Boot Camp, and leads into the reading in her American Pioneer Level 1.

Hannah's lessons may bring in sounds in a different order. Follow her order, and use the step here that matches what she has taught.
The endings, and how to say them
- -s as in cats-s means more than one (cats) or is part of a verb (he hops). It says /s/ or /z/ (cats, dogs).
- -es as in boxes-es is added after s, x, z, sh and ch. It adds a beat: box, box-es.
- -ed as in jumped-ed means it already happened. It says /t/ (jumped), /d/ (filled) or /ed/ (landed).
- -ing as in jumping-ing means it is happening. A short word with a short vowel doubles its last letter first: run, running.
- y as in happyy at the end of a longer word says long e, as in happy and puppy.
Heart words for this step
Heart words are common words with a part that doesn't follow the rules your child knows yet. Sound out the regular parts, and learn the ♥ part by heart.
