Phonics Practice · Step 7 of 12
Blends
Two or three consonants side by side, each still heard: frog, stop, hand, jump.
Made by Teddy Rook Book to practice alongside Hannah Ward's lessons. It is not part of her curriculum. About this practice
For grown-ups
What this step teaches
In a blend, two or three consonants sit side by side and you still hear each one: fr in frog, st in stop, nd in hand, mp in jump. Each letter keeps its own sound box. Blends make words longer, so slow, steady tapping helps.
As you practice: Every letter in a blend keeps its own sound. Tap each one, then slide. If one gets dropped (sop for stop), tap the blend again slowly.
Away from the screen
- Say a blend word with a pause, “s...top,” and let your child put it together.
- Make two piles of letter cards, a blend (st, fr, cl) and an ending (-op, -og, -ap), and see how many real words you can make.
- Clap or tap for each sound in a blend word: s-t-o-p is four taps.
With Hannah's lessons
Goes with the longer words in the middle of Hannah's 120 lessons and her Phonics Reading Boot Camp. If her lesson for today had blends, practice the same kind here.

Hannah's lessons may bring in sounds in a different order. Follow her order, and use the step here that matches what she has taught.
Heart words for this step
Heart words are common words with a part that doesn't follow the rules your child knows yet. Sound out the regular parts, and learn the ♥ part by heart.
