Brain games, Greek & Roman

Short challenges for memory, attention, speed and spatial thinking, set among mosaics, coins, aqueducts and oracles. Each game watches how you are doing: it gets harder after a success and eases off after a miss. A session takes one to three minutes.

Mosaic Memory

Visual memory: remember which tiles of a Roman mosaic shone, on a grid that grows as you improve.

Coin Match

Attention and speed: say as fast as you can whether each coin matches the one before, and later the one two back.

Play →

Numbers in Order

Memory for places and order: the chimpanzee Ayumu’s famous number task, with a training ladder down to a fifth of a second.

Play →

Aqueduct Switches

Plan ahead and think in space: flip the gates so every stream of water runs to its own fountain.

Play →

Oracle’s Rule

Stay flexible: sort amphorae by the oracle’s secret rule, and notice fast when the rule quietly changes.

Play →

Teutoburg: Eagle Hunt

Spatial thinking under pressure: race a warrior to a lost legion eagle while the forest board turns, with Up always pointing north. Choose Eagle Hunt on Teutoburg’s start screen.

What these games can and can’t do

They are fun challenges for memory, attention, speed and spatial thinking, and you will see your scores climb as you practice. That is real progress, but mostly at the game itself: getting better at Coin Match makes you better at Coin Match. We don’t claim that any game here raises intelligence, protects against memory loss, or carries over to school, work or sport. In 2016 a large brain-training company agreed to pay $2 million to settle U.S. Federal Trade Commission charges that its ads made claims like those (FTC press release).

For the full story of how practice changes performance, read about Ayumu the chimpanzee on the Numbers in Order page.
