Good manners mean being kind. But being polite never means you must do something that feels wrong. You learned that you can choose how to say hello. Here is more.

Telling a trusted grown-up.

Key idea

If anyone makes you feel scared or uncomfortable, it is okay to say no, move away and tell a grown-up you trust.

Why it works

Manners are for being kind, not for doing things that feel wrong. Grown-ups who love you always want to know when something bothers you.

Who are your trusted grown-ups? Maybe a parent, a grandparent, or your teacher. You can name them with your grown-up today.

Worked example: Let's practice

Someone keeps tickling Ruby, even after she says stop. What can she do?
  1. Ruby can say no in a strong voice: “Stop!”
  2. She can move away.
  3. She can tell a grown-up she trusts.

Answer: Ruby says, “No! Stop!” moves away, and tells her mom.

Common mistake

Worrying that saying no to a grown-up is rude. It is not. Saying no, moving away and telling a trusted grown-up is always okay.
For the grown-up. Keep this calm and brief. Together, name three trusted adults. Let your child practice a strong “No, stop!” in a game. Thank them every time they tell you something, even small things, so telling feels safe.
