Waiting in Line

In a line, go to the end, wait your turn, keep your hands to yourself, and don't cut in front.

Not started Jump to practice

A line is taking turns with lots of people. We find lines at the slide, at lunch, and at the store.

Going to the end of the line.

Key idea

In a line: go to the end, wait your turn, keep your hands to yourself, and don't cut.

Why it works

Everyone in the line is waiting too. Going in order is fair, and fair feels good.

Waiting can feel long. You can count, hum quietly, or look around for something blue. Your turn will come.

Worked example: Let's practice

Mia is in line for lunch. Her friend Omar is not here yet. Should she save him a spot?
  1. Omar is not in the line.
  2. Saving him a spot puts him ahead of people who were waiting.
  3. That is cutting too.

Answer: No. Omar goes to the end when he comes.

Sort the cards: polite or not polite.

Common mistake

Cutting in to stand with a friend, or pushing to get closer. Saving a spot for someone who is not there is cutting too.
For the grown-up. Lines are boring for little ones. Play quiet games while you wait: I spy, counting colors, or guessing what is next. Praise patient waiting out loud.
