The library is full of books for everyone to share. It is a place for an inside voice, and even softer.

Putting books where the librarian asks.

Key idea

At the library: use a whisper voice, handle books gently, and put books where the librarian asks.

Why it works

Other people are reading and thinking. Library books belong to everyone, so we keep them nice for the next reader.

Your library card lets you take books home. Keep them in a safe spot, and bring them back on time so other kids can read them too.

Worked example: Let's practice

Hana wants to tell Sam about a funny book. They are at the library. How should she talk?
  1. They are at the library.
  2. Other people are reading.
  3. Hana uses the softest voice.

Answer: Hana whispers.

Sort the cards: polite or not polite.

Common mistake

Putting books back in any empty spot. Many libraries ask you to leave books on a cart, so they go back in the right place.
For the grown-up. Give your child a bookmark of their own, and a special bag for library books. At home, keep library books in one spot so they come back clean and on time.
