May I Please Be Excused?

When you are done, ask "May I please be excused?", thank the cook, and help carry your plate if you can.

You started the meal together. When you are done, there is a polite way to leave the table too.

Asking to be excused.

Key idea

When you are done, ask “May I please be excused?”, thank the cook, and help carry your plate if you can.

Why it works

Asking lets the family know you are done. Thanking the cook shows you noticed their work. Carrying your plate is a big help.

Different families do this in different ways. Some wait until everyone is done. Ask your grown-up what your family does.

Worked example: Let's practice

Hana is done eating. Mom says, “Yes, you may.” What else can Hana do?
  1. Mom said yes.
  2. Hana thanks her for dinner.
  3. She carries her plate to the kitchen.

Answer: Hana says, “Thank you for dinner!” and carries her plate.

Put the steps in order.

Common mistake

Leaving the table as soon as your own plate is empty. Asking to be excused lets the family know, and carrying a plate is a big help.
For the grown-up. Decide what “done” looks like for your family and say it simply. Show your child where to put their plate, and thank them every time they carry it.
