Chewing with Your Mouth Closed

Take small bites, chew with your lips closed, and finish chewing before you talk.

Now it is time to eat! How we chew is a table manner too. It goes with sitting well.

Swallow first, then talk.

Key idea

Take small bites, chew with your lips closed, and swallow before you talk.

Why it works

Nobody wants to see chewed food. Closed lips and empty mouths are kind to everyone at the table, and they help people understand you.

Here is a quick check: if someone looks at you while you chew, can they see your food? If your lips are closed, they can't.

Worked example: Let's practice

Grandma asks Leo a question while he is chewing. What does he do?
  1. Leo keeps his lips closed.
  2. He can nod or hold up one finger to say “one moment.”
  3. He swallows, then answers.

Answer: Leo finishes chewing, then answers Grandma.

A table manners chart to print.

Common mistake

Talking with a full mouth because you are excited to say something. Swallow first; the story will wait.
For the grown-up. Cut food into small pieces for little mouths. Use a friendly code word or gesture (a finger to your own lips) instead of correcting your child in front of others.
