Travel puts you shoulder to shoulder with strangers, like the neighbors you will only have for one flight. The same courtesy works: think about the people around you.

Key idea

On planes and trains, store bags quickly, recline gently, share the armrest (the middle seat gets both), keep calls short and quiet, and thank the crew and hotel staff.

Why it works

In a narrow aisle, one slow traveler holds up everyone behind. A seat slammed back can spill a drink or hit a knee, so a glance back and a gentle recline spare the person behind you. The middle seat has the least room, so many travelers let that passenger have both armrests. Crews and hotel staff serve many tired travelers, and a thank-you makes their day better.
A courteous traveler.

Worked example: Reclining

On a long flight, Leo wants to recline his seat. Behind him, a passenger is working on a laptop. What should he do?
  1. He glances back, and may say, "I'm going to recline a bit."
  2. He reclines slowly and only partway, and sits up for meals.

Answer: Look back, then recline gently.

Worked example: Boarding

Hana boards a crowded train with a large bag. What helps the people behind her?
  1. She steps out of the aisle as soon as she reaches her row.
  2. She stores the bag quickly, or steps into her row to let others pass if she needs a moment.

Answer: Store the bag quickly and clear the aisle.

Sort the travel habits.

Common mistake

Slamming the seat back or spreading into a neighbor's space. Many travelers think the middle seat gets both armrests; it is a kindness, not a rule. Quick check: is anything of yours, elbow, bag or sound, in someone else's space?
Customs differ: on some trains there are quiet cars where phone calls are not allowed at all. Look for signs, and follow them.
