Teens and AdultsHosting and Being a Guest

Overnight Guests

A good guest agrees on dates, follows the house routine, keeps their space tidy, offers to help, and sends a thank-you afterward; a good host gives towels, a key and a plan.

An overnight visit is hosting stretched over days. Host and guest share a home for a while, and small courtesies on both sides keep the visit happy.

Key idea

A good guest agrees on dates ahead, follows the house routine, keeps their space tidy, offers to help, and sends a thank-you afterward. A good host gives towels, a key and a plan.

Why it works

Sharing a home means sharing routines: meal times, the bathroom, quiet hours. A clear arrival and departure date lets the host plan work and meals. A guest who fits in with the household, tidies up and helps out lightens the host's load. A host who sets out towels and explains the plan spares the guest from having to ask for every small thing.

Worked example: Staying longer

Leo is visiting his friend Omar for the weekend and would like to stay until Tuesday. What should he do?
  1. The dates were agreed ahead; changing them is a request, not an announcement.
  2. He asks early and makes it easy to say no: "Would it be all right if I stayed until Tuesday? No worries if not."
  3. If Omar hesitates, Leo keeps the original plan.

Answer: Ask early, and make it easy to say no.

Worked example: Morning routine

At Rosa's home, the family eats breakfast at 7:30. Hana is a late sleeper. What should she do?
  1. She fits in with the house routine while she is a guest.
  2. She sets an alarm and joins breakfast, or asks the night before if it's all right to sleep in.

Answer: Follow the routine, or ask ahead.

Sort the guest habits.

Common mistake

Extending a stay without asking, or expecting to be entertained every hour. A clear arrival and departure date helps everyone, and a guest who can enjoy some quiet time is a gift to the host.
