Dress Codes Decoded

Social dress codes run from white tie and black tie to cocktail, smart casual and casual; at work, from business formal to business casual and casual. When unsure, ask the host.

After an interview, you will meet dress codes at work and at weddings, parties and dinners. The words can sound like a secret language, but each one names a step on a ladder from most to least formal.

Key idea

Social dress codes run from white tie and black tie to cocktail, smart casual and casual. At work they run from business formal to business casual and casual. When unsure, ask the host.

Why it works

A dress code helps guests feel comfortable, because no one wants to be the only person in jeans at a black-tie dinner, or the only one in a tuxedo at a picnic. Dressing for the occasion is also a way of showing respect for the host, who has planned an event of a certain kind. Since the terms are not always clear, asking is always polite.
Social dress codes, from most to least formal.
CodeWhat it usually means
White tieThe most formal: tailcoats, floor-length gowns. Rare today.
Black tieTuxedos; formal gowns or elegant cocktail dresses.
Black tie optionalA tuxedo or a dark suit and tie; a formal or cocktail dress.
Cocktail (semiformal)A suit, a dress or dressy separates.
Smart casualNeat and polished: slacks or nice jeans with a collared shirt or blouse, a blazer optional.
CasualEveryday clean clothes suited to the place.
Work dress codes, from most to least formal.
Work codeWhat it usually means
Business formalA suit and tie, or a suit or dress with a jacket.
Business casualSlacks or a skirt with a collared shirt, blouse or sweater; no athletic wear.
CasualNeat everyday clothes; the workplace's own norms decide.
Put the codes in order.

Worked example: Black tie optional

Omar's wedding invitation says "black tie optional." He doesn't own a tuxedo. What can he wear?
  1. Optional means a tuxedo is welcome but not required.
  2. A dark suit and tie is right.

Answer: A dark suit and tie.

Worked example: Business casual

On her first day, Mia's office is business casual. Is a hoodie and running shoes all right?
  1. Business casual is a step below a suit, not athletic wear.
  2. Slacks or a skirt with a blouse or sweater fits.

Answer: No: slacks or a skirt with a blouse or sweater.

Common mistake

Reading "black tie optional" as "jeans are fine" or "business casual" as athletic wear. Dressing for the occasion is a way of showing respect for the host. When unsure, ask, or dress a step up.
Customs differ: what counts as formal varies by region and culture, and traditional dress from many cultures is correct formal wear. Climate matters too: a summer garden party is lighter than a winter dinner.
