🔑 Key idea
Priests served in shifts: temple staff were divided into four groups (phyles) that took turns, one month each, so many priests served one month in four and then went back to their own lives.
💡 Why it works
Why shifts? A temple needed people every day, but most priests were also farmers, scribes or officials, with land and families. Rotating groups let many people share the work and the income from the temple’s offerings. While on duty a priest had to be pure: he shaved his body, washed several times a day, wore linen and kept rules about food. The Greek historian Herodotus noticed the shaving and the linen.
nṯr, "god", the second half of the title ḥm-nṯr, "god’s servant".
At the top of a great temple stood the high priest. The First God’s Servant of Amun at Karnak ran the richest temple in Egypt, with huge estates. Women served as chantresses, and a royal woman held the office of God’s Wife of Amun at Thebes.
✏️ Worked example: Months on duty
Staff were in four groups that served one month each in turn. How many months a year did one priest serve?
Twelve months shared by four groups.
12 ÷ 4 = 3.
Each priest served one month in four.
Answer: 3 months a year.
✏️ Worked example: Reading a title
A stela calls its owner "lector priest". What did he do?
The lector carried the ritual book.
He read the sacred texts aloud in rituals.
Lector priests also read at funerals.
Answer: He recited the rituals from the papyrus.
⚠️ Common mistake
Picturing priests as full-time monks who never left the temple. Many served one month in four and spent the rest of the year in their ordinary lives. Quick check: four phyles means three months a year on duty.
