Teddy Rook Book · For developers & co-ops

Use Teddy Rook Book on your own site

Put ladder practice, the Vocabulary word of the day, the day’s Harvard Classics reading, or Greek, Latin and hieroglyph practice on your co-op’s site with one line of HTML. Or download the practice engine and its lessons and problem banks to run yourself. It’s all free, and it comes as-is.

Embeds: one line of HTML

Each embed is a small page on teddyrookbook.com made to sit in a frame on another site. It has no menus or ads, it works from 280 to 900 pixels wide, and it always shows a small “From Teddy Rook Book” link. Because it runs on this site, it gets every fix and new lesson on its own. Paste the code where you want it to appear.

Practice one topic

Problems for one ladder topic, checked as you go, with the lesson a tap away. Three right answers, the last two in a row, pass the topic.

topic: a topic id, like g3.add-within-1000 (pick one below)
theme (optional): auto, light or dark

Practice a whole course

The ladder’s own practice for one course: new topics in teaching order, mixed reviews and checkpoints.

/embed/practice/?course=micro
course: a course key, like micro or alg1
theme (optional): auto, light or dark

Live preview

Vocabulary word of the day

One word from the Vocabulary Ladder each day, the same for everyone, with its picture, meaning and memory hook.

Greek or Latin word of the day

One common word from the Gospels each day, the same for everyone: its dictionary form, meaning, a real form with its grammar, and a verse where it appears, with the King James Version English.

/embed/lang-word/?lang=grc
lang: grc (Koine Greek) or lat (Latin)
theme (optional): auto, light or dark

A short sentence drill

A few Latin or Greek sentences a day to hear, say back and understand, like the site’s Sentence Drills. Tap any word for its meaning and grammar. Gospel verses come with the King James Version; classical sentences with old public-domain translations.

/embed/lang-drill/?lang=lat&set=gospels
lang: grc or lat · set: gospels (part of a Gospel passage each day) or classical (Caesar, Cicero, Virgil and Ovid in Latin; Herodotus, Homer and Plutarch in Greek)
theme (optional): auto, light or dark

Greek alphabet practice

Six short lessons, from the letters to reading real words from the New Testament, each with a quick quiz.

/embed/alphabet/
theme (optional): auto, light or dark

Write your name in hieroglyphs

Type a name and see it spelled with Egyptian sound signs in a cartouche, the way scribes wrote Greek and Roman names. Choose other signs, then save it as a picture.

/embed/hieroglyphs/
theme (optional): auto, light or dark

Progress in a practice embed is kept in the visitor’s browser, inside the frame. Browsers keep a framed page’s storage apart from the same site opened in its own tab, so a learner’s embed progress and their progress on teddyrookbook.com don’t mix. Each embed says so in small print, with a link to open the same thing on the full site. If a browser blocks storage in frames, practice still works; it just isn’t saved.

Build your snippet

Pick a ladder, a course and a topic (or the whole course), then a theme and a height. Copy the code, or preview it first.

The toolkit: run it yourself

For developers who want the practice on their own server or in their own app, with no connection to this site. One zip file holds:

  • The engine: the answer checker, the math typesetter, the answer box, the mastery and review engine and the problem card (plain JavaScript and CSS, no outside libraries).
  • Twelve ladders: Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth & Space, Writing & Grammar, Vocabulary, Logic, Geography, American History & Civics, Economics and Etiquette, each with its topic maps, lessons, problem generators and visuals.
  • Vocabulary: the 1,000-word list with meanings, memory hooks and the drawings for each word.
  • The Family Study units (one theme for the whole family, each child at their level).
  • An example page that runs practice for any topic, with no internet connection, and a second one (language.html) that reads a Gospel passage in Greek with the King James Version, a word at a time.
  • Language packs: the Greek and Latin Gospels word by word, the classical sentences, the King James Version for the verses used, the Greek alphabet lessons and the cartouche maker. Each pack has its own LICENSE and CREDITS file; see the table below.
  • The licenses, a list of the outside pieces and their licenses, and a short README.

The terms, in plain words

It’s free.
No fee, no sign-up and no key. Embeds and the toolkit carry no ads and no tracking.
The code is MIT.
The engine’s code (the JavaScript and CSS) is under the MIT License, copyright Teddy Rook. Use it, change it and share it, even in paid products, as long as the copyright and license notice stay with it.
The content is CC BY-NC 4.0.
The lessons, the problem generators’ question text, the topic maps, the word lists and the readings’ guides are under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0. Use and adapt them for teaching that isn’t sold, and give credit with a link back, like this: From Teddy Rook Book (teddyrookbook.com), CC BY-NC 4.0. Say if you changed anything. Public-domain texts, like the Harvard Classics readings themselves, stay public domain. The Greek and Latin material comes from other projects under their own licenses; see Licenses & credits.
Embeds just work.
You’re welcome to frame an embed on your site, co-op page or class page. Please keep the “From Teddy Rook Book” link visible.
The addresses stay put.
The embed addresses above (/embed/practice/, /embed/word/, /embed/reading/, /embed/lang-word/, /embed/lang-drill/, /embed/alphabet/ and /embed/hieroglyphs/, with the parameters shown) will keep working for as long as the site is up. What’s inside them will change as lessons improve.
As-is, with no support.
This is a one-person project. Everything here comes as-is, with no guarantees and no promise of help, fixes or notice of changes. There are no versions to track and no support line. Test it on your site, and keep a copy of the toolkit you rely on.

To share a note or a broken link, Teddy Rook is on X as @teddyrookbook. Replies aren’t promised.

Licenses & credits for the language material

The language embeds and packs are built on the work of other scholars and projects. We name every one of them, even where the license doesn’t ask us to. The site’s own lessons and tools stay under CC BY-NC 4.0 (content) and MIT (code); the packs below keep the license of what they’re made from.

CC BY-NC-SA material (the Latin Gospels and the PROIEL sentences) may not be used commercially, and anything you make from it must be shared under the same license. CC BY-SA material may be used commercially, but must be shared alike. Every embed shows its own sources in a small “Sources and credits” note.

Credits

The site itself quotes 499 verses of the ESV® Bible (© 2001 by Crossway) under Crossway’s quotation allowance. That allowance doesn’t cover embeds or downloads, so the embeds and the toolkit use the King James Version instead, for the same verses.

What’s not included, and why

  • Hannah Ward’s Actual Reading lessons: shared on the site with her permission, which doesn’t yet cover embeds or downloads. They stay on the site only.
  • Markets data: FRED and other data providers set their own terms.
  • The ESV English: the site quotes 499 verses of the ESV under Crossway’s quotation allowance, which doesn’t cover embeds or downloads, so the embeds and the toolkit use the King James Version instead.
  • The Greek audio recording: Marilyn Phemister’s reading is free for non-commercial use with credit; the Greek drill embed streams it from the Internet Archive with that credit, but it isn’t ours to bundle in a download.
  • Art, Egyptology and Ancient Scripts ladders: they use artwork, fonts and images with their own licenses.

The embeds show only what’s on this site. The toolkit leaves out anything whose license doesn’t let us pass it on.
