Caring for a Pet

A pet needs food, fresh water, a clean home, exercise, gentle hands and visits to the vet.

Not started Jump to practice

A pet depends on you. It cannot fill its own water bowl or go to the store for food. Taking care of a pet is a big, kind job.

What does a pet need, and how often?

Key idea

A pet needs food, fresh water, a clean home, exercise, gentle hands and visits to the vet.

Why it works

A pet is an animal, and it has the same needs as every animal: food, water, air and shelter. In the wild it would find them itself. In our homes, we are the ones who give them, every single day.

Worked example: Let's think it through

You are very busy today. Does your pet still need food and water?
  1. A pet needs food and water every day.
  2. It cannot get them by itself.
  3. Busy days count too.

Answer: Yes. Feed it and give it fresh water.

Common mistake

Children often think a pet needs care only when they feel like playing with it. A pet needs food and fresh water every day, even on busy days.
For the grown-up. A simple chart on the fridge, with a check box for food and water each day, helps a child own the job. A vet is the right person to ask what a particular pet needs.
