Living Things Grow and Change

A kitten grows into a cat and a seed grows into a tree. Living things start small and grow, and many change shape as they grow.

You were once a tiny baby. Now you are bigger! All living things start small and grow. Some change shape as they grow, too.

Young and grown-up: a tadpole becomes a frog, a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, a sprout becomes a tree.

Key idea

Living things grow from small to big, and many change how they look as they grow.

Why it works

A young living thing grows into a grown-up of its own kind. A tadpole looks like a little fish, but it is a young frog. It can only grow into a frog.

Worked example: Let's think it through

What does a caterpillar grow into?
  1. A caterpillar eats leaves and grows.
  2. It makes a chrysalis.
  3. It comes out as a butterfly.

Answer: A butterfly.

Common mistake

Children think young living things are just smaller copies of their parents. Many are, like kittens and chicks. But a tadpole and a caterpillar look very different from the grown-ups they become.
Put the frog's life in order.
For the grown-up. Baby pictures help here. Put a photo of your child as a baby next to one from today, and talk about what changed and what stayed the same.
