Counting a Population

Ecologists estimate a population by counting in a few sample squares (quadrats) and scaling up: average count per square × number of squares in the whole area.

Not started Jump to practice

Nobody can count every dandelion in a park. Ecologists count a few small sample squares, called quadrats, and scale up. It is the same thinking as a unit rate: find the count per square meter, then multiply by the number of square meters.

Key idea

Estimate = average count per quadrat × (total area ÷ area of one quadrat). Use several quadrats placed at random, and make sure both areas use the same units.
A field split into 60 quadrats of 1 m² each. Tap squares to sample them and watch the estimate change.

Why it works

Plants are not spread evenly. One quadrat might land on a bare patch and another on a thick clump. Averaging several random quadrats cancels out lucky and unlucky squares, so the estimate gets closer to the truth. Random placement keeps you from choosing only the thick patches.

Worked example: Scale up

Five 1 m² quadrats in a 200 m² meadow hold 4, 7, 3, 6 and 5 clover plants. Estimate the clover population.
  1. Average: (4 + 7 + 3 + 6 + 5) ÷ 5 = 25 ÷ 5 = 5 plants per quadrat.
  2. Quadrats in the meadow: 200 m² ÷ 1 m² = 200.
  3. Estimate: 5 × 200 = 1,000.

Answer: About 1,000 clover plants.

Worked example: Match the units

Quadrats are 0.5 m on each side and hold an average of 3 snails. The garden is 20 m². How many snails?
  1. Area of one quadrat: 0.5 m × 0.5 m = 0.25 m².
  2. Number of quadrats that fit: 20 ÷ 0.25 = 80.
  3. Estimate: 3 × 80 = 240.

Answer: About 240 snails.

Common mistake

Two mistakes are common. Some students multiply one quadrat's count by the whole area without averaging several. Others forget to match units: a quadrat 50 cm on a side is 0.25 m², not 50 m² or 0.5 m². Check: does your estimate equal (average per m²) × (area in m²)?
Animals that move around are counted other ways, such as catching, marking and releasing some, then seeing what share of a later catch is marked.
